Rules for the Contest

The contest will be held on two days. The first day (1st November 2007) is open to students of classes XI and XII while the second day (2nd November 2007) is for classes IX and X. The school must send a team of 5 participants on each day.

1st November 2007 (Classes XI and XII)

The contest will comprise of three events. Event A will be the Short Project Presentation Round. Event B will comprise of a Quiz, which will include a problem solving round. Event C will be a surprise event. Each school should send a team of five participants. Two students will present their project in event A, two students (the quizzers) will participate in event B and the fifth student will participate in the surprise event. A teacher must accompany every team.

Rules for Event A (Short Project Presentation Round).

(a) Each team must work on a project related one of the following topics

1. Cryptography

2. Probability

3. Game Theory

4. Mathematics in Biology

5. Graph Theory

6. Combinatorics

(b) Projects must be investigatory in nature.

(c) The project must be based on any of the above topics and should highlight some application of the topic to a real life problem.

(d) The project must be innovative in nature. Effort must be made by each team to make some original contribution to the problem at hand.

(e) Projects must not reproduce textbook material.

(f) Each project must be supported by a project report comprising of not more than 8 to 10 A4 sheets typed in double space. No hand written projects will be entertained. Each project report must include a brief abstract (not more than 150 words), the aim or objective of the project, the mathematical theory, and findings and conclusions.

Five copies of the report, duly signed by the head of the institution, must reach Delhi Public School R K Puram latest by 20th October.

(g) Students may present the project via a computer presentation in MS Office or Adobe Flash. A project may be also be supported by physical model or a computer program.

All teams must bring their computer presentations and programs on CDs or flash drives only. No school will be allowed to bring their own CPU. If any other equipment is required for presentation, the participating team must bring it. Each team will be given 8-10 minutes (depending on the number of teams) for presenting their project.

The projects will be judged on the following criteria:

(i) Originality of idea and innovativeness.

(ii) Practical relevance.

(iii) Presentation during the contest.

Rules for Event B (Quiz).

This will consist of 2 rounds, a written preliminary round of 90 minutes followed by a final on-stage round. The final round will test the participants’ in depth knowledge of the following topics:

a. History of Mathematics.

b. Mathematics Trivia

c. Personalities

d. Terminologies and Definitions

e. Applications of Mathematics to other fields like Biology, Economics etc.

f. Mathematics concepts (from class XI and XII level)

The details of the surprise event (Event C) will be disclosed during the contest.

2nd November 2007 (Classes IX and X)

The contest will comprise of three events. Event A will be the Mathematical model presentation round, Event B will comprise of a Mathematical Quiz & Puzzles round and Event C will be a Sudoku round. Each school should send a team of five participants. Two students will present their project in Event A, two will participate in Event B and the fifth student will participate in Event C.

Rules for Event A (Mathematical Model Presentation Round)

Each team must work on a physical model, which satisfies the following:

(i) The model must be based on some mathematical theory or it must highlight some mathematical concept.

(ii) A PowerPoint or Adobe Flash presentation must explain the theory or ideas on which the model is based.

(iii) Five copies of a project report (comprising of not more than 5 to 6 A4 sheets typed in double space) explaining the theory on which the model is based must reach Delhi Public School R K Puram latest by 20th October 2007, duly signed by the head of the institution.

Rules for Event B (Mathematics Quiz and Puzzles Round)

Questions posed in this round will be based on the following:

a. General Mathematics Trivia

b. Mathematics puzzles.

Rules for Event C (Sudoku Round).

There will be 2 rounds consisting of 2 Sudoku puzzles each. There will be elimination after the first round and 10 participants will qualify for the final round. The level of difficulty in both the rounds will follow the given pattern:

(a) 1 Medium (3 Stars)

(b) 1 Difficult (5 Stars)

Registration of teams for the contest on both days will be from 7:30 to 8:30 am. The competition will begin sharp at 8:30 am. Schools are requested to confirm their participation by sending the enclosed registration forms latest by 30th September 2007.
